Reliable transfer journalist David Ornstein has provided clarity on Liverpool’s links to one Premier League star.
Liverpool’s transfer rumour mill has been buzzing in the last couple of days, with several names being touted as possible options for the Reds.
The rumours are based on the fact that Liverpool are planning for a busy summer.
After sealing the Premier League title, Arne Slot is expected to be fully backed in the transfer market.
It is thought that the Liverpool coach will be handed a considerable transfer kitty to pursue players that will improve his current squad and put Liverpool in a position to compete favourably for the Premier League title next season.
The club’s hierarchy, determined to avoid the stagnation that followed their 2019/20 title, is reportedly ready to back Slot with substantial funds to fend off resurgent rivals Manchester City and Arsenal.
Among the players linked with a switch to Anfield this summer, one name that has brought a lot of intrigue among fans is Kevin De Bruyne.
The 33-year-old is set to end his chapter at the Etihad at the end of this season, and several clubs abroad have been linked with a swoop for him.
Last month, reports in the Manchester City’s star native Belgium revealed that a move to Liverpool cannot be ruled out.
The outlet mentions his Grandfather’s support for the Reds as one reason, while also referring to De Bruyne’s claim that a Premier League stay is “possible” beyond this summer.
Interestingly that news was substantiated by the relaible Gianluca DiMarzio on Wednesday, with the journalist revealing that Liverpool have sent in an offer for De Bruyne.
However, DiMarzio’s claim was flately denied by The Athletic’s James Pearce on Thursaday, while local reports in Liverpool also claimed that the news was wide off the mark.
David Ornstein has now provided more clarification on the matter, revealing that “any notion of Liverpool moving for Kevin De Bruyne are wide of the mark.”
De Bruyne has been one of Man City’s best players ever, cementing his status as a truly creative player by scoring 107 goals and registering 177 assists across 415 appearances for the Sky Blues so far.
In fact, since making his debut for City, no other midfielder has had more assists than him across Europe’s top five leagues.
But as Ornstein has reported, it seems unlikely that Liverpool will make a move for De Bruyne, considering FSG’s youth-centric policy.
At 33, the Belgian is approaching the twilight of his career?
His wage demands could also tear up the Reds’ current wage bill.
